New build Plantorama, Hørsholm (Denmark) 2021
In collaboration with the Danish office Rambøll, Breddels Architecten designed the new modern garden center Plantorama in Hørsholm.
Plantorama Hørsholm opened on March 25, 2021 as the twelfth sustainable experience center with a huge range of products for home, garden and animals. On the floor in the heart of the garden center is the restaurant 'Restorama' with a view of the plants and of 'Spirestrup', a fairytale play world with numerous play activities where the children can enjoy themselves.
As with Plantorama Tilst, the use of the special asymmetrical roof construction and the adapted north-south orientation gave the project the ideal 'Knowledge Based Building' implementation. For example, the asymmetrical sloping roof surfaces on the south side are used for solar panels and on the north side transparent polycarbonate panels have been used for as much natural light as possible.
Plantorama Hørsholm was built with care for the environment. The garden center has installed 526 solar panels on the roof, with a total capacity of 171,841 kWh. This means that 50-60% of the garden center's electricity consumption is covered by the sun's rays. In addition, modern LED lighting has been installed throughout the garden center. Maximum natural ventilation is achieved by means of the widened ridge ventilation. Together with the screen cloths, they provide ideal conditions and a constant air temperature for the plants.
Wide rain gutters prevent flooding during extreme rainfall. Rainwater is collected in underground tanks, which can hold 600,000 liters of water, for example to water plants. This reduces water consumption while watering the plants with lime-free rainwater, which most plants prefer. Once the plants are watered, the excess water flows back into the tank, preventing a major waste of water.
